Nožička and Wohryzek
It is the 1920s and young Czech-American Benjamin Wohryzek and his new girlfriend, talented and attractive journalist Laura Nožičková, are embarking on a quest in search of Benjamin’s father, an American businessman and dealer in “white china”. They are joined by three Czech writers, important names in the literary canon - Karel Čapek, Jaroslav Hašek, and Franz Kafka – who, as is well known, share a passion for nature and the outdoors. Together, they follow clues that lead them deep into the forests and inlets around the Vltava River. Written with lightness and humor, the story addresses topics like emigration, Czechness, family relationships, the emancipation of women, and business ethics, but above all it is another of Mr. Toman’s many contributions to reading and literature in general. Nožička and Wohryzek is the final book in a loose trilogy for readers 12 and up that includes Cross-eyed Jim’s Confectionary (2018) and the Unbelievable Adventures of Florentine Flowers (2019)
