Daniel Pennac, Dora Dutková / Stubborn Dog

An ugly pooch is born. No one wants him but he’s unbelievably lucky. The dog learns about life in the dingy suburbs of Nice, in the dog shelter and in the streets of Paris. The famous French writer Daniel Pennac is also the author of a series of novels about Benjamin Malaussen, also well-known in Czech. Stubborn Dog is a real dog novel about the search for love and friendship. It’s about a hideous dog whose journey to his true mistress starts in the dump. That’s where he was thrown as an unwanted puppy. After many adventures he escapes Nice’s suburbs and finally gets to Paris to his desired Quince. She’s a spoiled dreadful little girl, who’ll become his only and beloved mistress. All this is told from the viewpoint of one mulish dog who knows that there’s nothing for it but to tame people first.

The publisher Tereza Horváthová says:

‘Pennac’s story oscillates between a brilliant caricature of “two-legged creatures”, whom the dog meets on his journey (masterly witty scenes with the butcher, small-town mistress and his new family) and an adventure saga about loyalty and friendship. All you kids who belong to the nation of dog lovers, this book’s for you!’
